Four states now mandate that hearing healthcare providers must provide information about the dual versatility of the hearing aid’s telecoil to people with hearing loss. Not only do hearing aid telecoils provide audible enhancement for telephones but, in addition, telecoils can link the user into multiple looped venues with poor acoustics. In the Chicago area, 80 such places have induction hearing loops installed–from the Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire, to houses of worship of all denominations, to senior center gathering rooms to the five screen Renaissance Theatre in Highland Park. Induction hearing loops resolve problems with background noise, reverberation (annoying echoing of sound), and distance issues. Hearing loops reduce Listening Effort and Social Isolation–both known risk factors for dementia.
