Hearing Aids 101
A practical primer on what to know before you choose
How hearing aids actually help
Your ears collect sound, but your brain does the understanding. When hearing changes occur, parts of speech become harder to distinguish – especially in noisy environments. Hearing aids, including discreet options like CIC (completely-in-canal) hearing aids, capture sound with microphones, process it digitally in real time, and deliver a cleaner, clearer signal to your ear. The goal is less strain and more understanding.

Tips for a smooth start
Hearing aids often take a little time to get used to, but small adjustments will go a long way. Wear your devices during most waking hours, ease into challenging places (like restaurants) after a few days, and jot down questions for your follow-up.
What Do Hearing Aids Cost — and What Does Insurance Cover?
Cost is one of the most common questions we hear, and we believe in being upfront about it. Here’s what patients at our Libertyville and Gurnee offices typically need to know.
What do hearing aids cost? Hearing aid prices typically depend
On the technology level, brand, and style. Entry-level devices handle quiet conversations well; premium devices use AI-driven processing to perform in complex, noisy environments. During your evaluation, we’ll match a technology tier to your actual listening needs — there’s no reason to pay for features you won’t use, and no reason to underinvest in features you genuinely need.
Does insurance cover hearing aids?
Coverage varies significantly by plan. Some private insurance plans — including many offered through Illinois employers — cover a portion of hearing aid costs every one to three years. We accept most major insurance plans and will verify your specific benefits before your appointment so there are no surprises. We’ll handle the insurance verification so you can focus on your hearing.
What about Medicare?
Original Medicare (Parts A and B) does not cover hearing aids. However, many Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans available to Illinois residents do include hearing aid benefits toward the cost of devices. If you’re on a Medicare Advantage plan, bring your insurance card and we’ll check your benefits.
Are financing options available?
Yes. We offer flexible financing options so that cost doesn’t stand between you and better hearing. Ask us about payment plans at your appointment — we’ll help you find an approach that fits your budget.
What about Over-the-Counter (OTC) hearing aids?
OTC hearing aids are available without a prescription for adults with mild-to-moderate hearing loss. They can be a starting point for some patients, but they lack custom programming, professional fitting, and follow-up care. We’ve written more about the OTC vs. prescription difference here.
